I read about a bike ride through the dunes east of Scheveningen, ending at the Meijendel Pancake Farm.  A pancake "farm"?   Well, we had to find out what that is and eat some Dutch pancakes (pannenkoek).
We found a place to rent bikes down by the beach, and walked down to get them.  It was a beautiful walk through our neighborhood and down a small commercial street, Keizerstraat.

Beautiful house with a very interesting roof.  What material is it made of??

A dog peeking out onto the street from the balcony of another stately house.

Keizerstraat has some great produce markets and we found our first Hema discount store.  We bought Louis some Dutch socks at Hema on our way home.

A very windy day at the beach indeed.  We also got hit by a couple of squalls.  But we didn't care....

After some hemming and hawing, and hiding under the trees during a downpour, we found the pancake farm.  Nobody looked twice at us despite our wet and bedraggled appearance.  You can get pancakes with syrup (stroop), apple compote, honey (honig), raisins, ham and cheese (kaas), and on and on.  The pancakes were huge and delicious!  And this coming from someone who doesn't care for American-style pancakes.  Louis had apple compote, August, ham and cheese, Oliver, nutella and Spencer and I shared applecompote and cheese.  Yum!  I loved the stroop...tastes like a combo of maple syrup and molasses.  The best of both tastes.  We followed this with coffee, of course!

Back on our bikes...the rain had ceased.
The only reason I can think of for calling this a pancake farm was what looked like a barn next to the restaurant.  Hmmm, I was disappointed not to find rows of pancakes growing in the fields.

A pheasant in the dunes along the ride back to town.

On the way back...stopping to take in the views.

When it was discovered that the dunes filter water, all plans to build roads and buildings on the dunes were canceled many years ago.  Lucky for us, as the area provided a really fun and beautiful bike ride.

Oliver and Louis stop by the old water tower in the dunes near Scheveningen. The tower was built in 1874 to extract drinking water from the dunes and is still used.

After biking back along the dunes, we parked our bikes and walked along the boardwalk of Scheveningen.

The Kurhaus resort at Scheveningen dates back to the late 1800's.  It is stately but surrounded by modern-day concessions.

A very slow day at the beach...

"Crazy Pianos" bar.  When Louis saw this he said, "It's messed up!"

We returned our bikes, walked back home and went out to dinner in our 'hood.  On our walk home from dinner we came across this sign.  This is when not knowing the local language allows for some serious laughs!  "parking...smash?!?"
